National Blood Donor Week

National Blood Donor Week

Last week marked the celebration of those in the community that roll up their sleeves to save lives.

The Australian Red Cross held a Blood Donor Recognition morning tea and presentation recently, with our own Olivia Fischer heading along for recognition of her 50 donation milestone! Donors who made donations from 50 donations right up to an incredible 500 donations were celebrated.

While these donation numbers are an incredible achievement, what you might be surprised to learn is that 40% of the blood donations required in the last year came from those who only made one donation for the year! Incredible!

1 in 3 people in their lives will need blood – but only 1 in 30 people donate. This statistic is seriously out of balance – but you can help! Modern processing techniques mean that a single blood donation, when separated into its components, can help at least 3 different patients and contribute to making up to 22 different products! Donations are used in a variety of different ways, including helping cancer patients and suffers of blood diseases (for example, leukaemia), surgical patients, car accident victims, suffers of heart, stomach and kidney disease, burn victims…so many uses that help so many people.

A number of our team are regular blood donors, and you can join us – simply register online to join the “O’Connells OBM” Red25 donation team.
