Today, we were recognised for creating the most positive overall employee impact by B the Change Media based on an independent, comprehensive assessment administered by the independent nonprofit B Lab. Honourees are featured in the upcoming fall issue of B Magazine and on B the Change’s digital platform, bthechange.com. We were also honoured at the first-annual Best for the World Celebration & Awards Ceremony at the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas Business School.
We are honoured to be mentioned in the Best for Workers list, which includes businesses that earned a Workers score in the top 10 percent of more than 1,800 Certified B Corporations on the B Impact Assessment. The full assessment measures a company’s impact on its workers, community, customers and the environment. The 124 winning companies in the Workers category come from 14 industries and 15 countries.
The Workers portion of the B Impact Assessment assesses the company’s relationship with its workforce. It measures how the company treats its workers through compensation, benefits, training and ownership opportunities provided to workers. The category focuses on the overall work environment within the company through management/worker communication, job flexibility, corporate culture and worker health and safety practices. Honourees scoring in the top 10 percent set a gold standard for the high impact that business as a force for good can make on employees around the world.
We have always been about much more than debits and credits, and we were the first Brisbane-based company to receive B Corporation Certification in December 2014, supporting our belief that success in business starts with how the individuals inside a business are treated.
For us, success in business is about much more than numbers. We think of business as a vehicle that can create a positive impact on the lives of those connected to it. Being recognized as “Best for Workers” is humbling recognition of our efforts to putting team members first and creating a positive work environment.
We attribute our high work environment score to our open-book management culture. Based on the principles of openness and transparency, our approach to the management style is called the Great Game of Business. At it’s core the Great Game of Business is about having a positive impact of the lives of our team by engaging, educating, and empowering them.
We hope more businesses follow suit and join the growing B Corp community. We are really proud to be a part of a community of likeminded businesses owners and we are looking forward to sharing our experience with others how employees can contribute to building a better business, all the while bettering themselves and the communities they live in.
It’s that desire to help the community that led us to create The Goods (www.getthegoods.com.au) – a community for SMEs to join to help business owners build a good business and live a great life by connecting them to service providers, tools & resources needed to develop in critical business areas. Consistent with our belief that business is a vehicle that can create a positive impact on the lives of those who are connected to it, a portion of subscriber fees from The Goods are earmarked to support accelerator programs / social enterprise advocates across Australia that give social entrepreneurs the skills, networks and expertise they need to build a social enterprise with sustainable impact.
The 124 Best for Workers companies come from 14 different industries such as manufacturing, financial services and engineering. B the Change Media simultaneously released separate lists recognizing B Corporations as Best for the World (overall impact), Best for the Environment, Best for Customers and Best for Community, which can be found at http://best.bthechange.com. Additional 2016 Best for Workers honorees include: King Arthur Flour; Namaste Solar; and Dansko.
